Team Info

This community team is a dream that Dr. Kathy has been eager to actualize for years, especially since the dissolution of the beloved TriCats triathlon club.  Her vision is to encourage and incorporate fitness and activity into the lifestyles of the people of our community in order for them to attain and maintain spinal, muscular, and cardiovascular health.  There is no better way to accomplish this than to create a welcoming, convenient, inexpensive multi-sport team with concrete goals which will help athletes really commit to their training schedules!

Since Dr. Kathy’s own passions for adventure tend to lean toward the off-road variety (trail running, mountain biking, adventure racing, etc.), she has decided to take the team in that direction.  Also, judging from the participation levels at all the local EX2 races--which consistently sell out--there are plenty of local like-minded athletes!  Everyone from beginners to professionals, all with awesome attitudes, will be welcome!

Having maintained a great affiliation with TriCats for several years, annually renewing gold sponsorship for M.O.R.E. mountain biking club, volunteering as one of XTERRA’s ambassadors, and participating as an integral member of The Bike Lane's team, Dr. Kathy has met so many members of the community who are not just runners or just mountain bikers, but multi-talented athletes of all interests and levels.  These are zealous individuals who love well-organized training schedules and interaction with fun and friendly people.  With this is mind, Dr. Kathy’s dream has become a reality—through Team Positive Adventure!  So spread the word!  Get involved!  Let’s go have fun in the dirt!

As this team kicks off, we'll take any assistance we can get.  If you'd like to join or help out with our team, please email Pierre Martel.

Dr. Kathy RunDr. Kathy's Sporting Bio: Dr. Kathy has been an avid athlete her whole life, having grown up riding horses, competing in local rodeos in northern British Columbia, playing basketball, and downhill skiing at Whistler.  She started running and mountain biking in college.  After undergrad, she completed several marathons, eventually qualifying for the Boston Marathon.  Dr. Kathy moved to Northern Virginia and immediately became busy upon starting her chiropractic practice.  She re-discovered her talents in mountain biking and running, combining her love for them in the new and exciting sport of XTERRA off-road triathlon.  After narrowly surviving the swim in her first race, she managed to qualify for the XTERRA World Championships in Maui and has returned 4 times since then with a best finish of 2nd place in her age group.  In addition to racing several XTERRA events each year, Dr. Kathy also competes in local trail, mountain bike, and adventure races.  Her favorite event was the EX2 Venture Quest Adventure Race.

From an interview with XTERRA World Champion Conrad "The Caveman" Stoltz:

Q: With a majority of your races focused on XTERRA, what is the draw of these versus an Ironman?

A: Let's see...Follow a white line for seven hours and see how much pain you can take.  Repeat 2-3 times a year.  Training: As much as you can of the before mentioned.

Or...

Slide sideways through a gravelly corner (eyes on the exit of the corner, elbows up, head over stem, weight on outside pedal, finger slightly on rear brake), "I wonder if Dan rails this one too?" Sprint 800 watts for 20 seconds till the forest becomes a green blur, carefully bunny hop once, twice to get through the rock garden, upon landing, hit the brakes hard, (Wonder if I made the right tire selection? Tire pressure seems good- remember 27.5psi") turn sharp right into a 6-foot drop, WHOOP loudly as adrenaline rushes through your body, pedal 450 watts for 3 mins through a twisty tunnel of trees."  This is only 4 minutes of a 2h30m race.  Repeat 10-12 times a year.  More, especially if you want to travel to Brazil, New Zealand, South Africa, Austria or Sardinia.  Training: Road bike, mountain bike, dirt bike, trail run.  Carefully balance power, endurance, altitude and technique training, depending on the course you are targeting.

Oh yeah... you know you want to go ride!
